The song starts with Jon Lord
's organs, along with Neil Murray
driving bass playing. Soon the guitars enter along with emotional yet heavy lyrics delivered by David Coverdale. According to Coverdale, both this and "Fool for Your Loving
" were inspired by the end of Coverdale's first marriage.
The song has proved to be one of Whitesnake's most popular songs, being a part of Whitesnake's set list for many years. Current Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich
has also said that "Don't Break My Heart Again" is one of his favorite Whitesnake songs.
After the song's release it became a mainstay in Whitesnake's set list until 1985. After this the band retired many of their older songs (including this one), as the band no longer featured any members that were present during its recording (except for Coverdale). In 2002, when Whitesnake reformed after a four-year hiatus, the song was brought back, as well as many other older songs.
The single's B-side, "Child of Babylon", is also featured on Come an' Get It, and was written by Coverdale and guitarist Bernie Marsden
