It was established in September 2010 under the joint sponsorship of the Drapers' Company and Queen Mary, University of London
. It is located on the site of the former King's Wood School
. Its future had been thrown into doubt on 7 July by the government's announcement of cuts to the national school building programme, but after reconsideration was given approval on 6 August.
It will specialise in teaching science and mathematics. A sixth form will be created once building work is finished.
The School's first principal is Matthew Slater.
