Edward Vernon Whiton was an American
jurist and politician from Wisconsin
.
Born in South Lee, Massachusetts, Whiton moved to Janesville, Wisconsin
, where he practiced law. In 1838-1842, he served in the Wisconsin Territorial House of Representatives and served as speaker. From 1844-1846, he served in the Wisconsin Territorial Council. In 1847, Whiton was elected to the second Wisconsin Constitutuional Convention. In 1848, Whiton was elected a Wisconsin Circuit Court
judge and also served as a justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court
until a separate supreme court was formed in 1853. In 1852, Whiton was elected the first Chief Justice of the newly formed Wisconsin Supreme Court serving until his death.
