He attempted to run as councillor for the newly-amalgamated city of Gatineau in 2001 but lost the election. He attempted once in 2005 and defeated incumbent André Levac. announced his opposition to a city project that would built a new composting plant at the site of a former landfill of the former city of Aylmer. Thérien mentioned that the location is heavily polluted due to the usage of the landfill site.
