awaited. Tipp, however, proved more than a match for the champions of the previous two years and won the game by 2-18 to 2-7. It was Ryan's first All-Ireland
minor title and Tipperary's first in a decade.
Following this victory Ryan spent two unsuccessful years with the Tipperary intermediate team while also spending three years with the county under-21 side. In 2008 he won a Munster
title in this grade following a 1-16 to 2-12 defeat of Clare
. The subsequent All-Ireland final pitted Tipp against Kilkenny
, however, 'the Cats' claimed the title by 2-13 to 0-15.
. Tipperary stormed into a decisive lead as they took the game by the scruff of the; however, ‘the Cats’ clawed their way back into the game. At the end of normal time both sides were level. A period of extra-time followed, however, in spite of a 2-26 to 4-17 defeat, Ryan's side were widely lauded for their performance. The subsequent championship campaign saw Tipp reach the Munster final for a second consecutive year. had to leave the field with an injury. A hat-trick of goals by Lar Corbett
and a fourth by Noel McGrath denied Kilkenny's drive-for-five and secured a remarkable 4-17 to 1-18 victory. It was Ryan's first All-Ireland
