The municipality was created by a split from Vågan

 in 1856. At that time Gimsøy had a population of 987. On 1 January 1964 Gimsøy was reunited with Vågan. Prior to the merger Gimsøy had a population of 1.551.

Gimsøy church (Gimsoy kirke) is located in Gimsøysand on the island of Gimsøya. The church is built of wood. It was inaugurated on 18 October 1876 and has 300 seats. The church was repaired after storms in 1887 and 1906, and also repaired in 1954-55.
