Early life and education

Gunnar Host Sjowall was born in 1936 in xxxx, the son of Gunnar Theodor Sjowall, a photographer, and his wife xxxx. As a child, he showed early promise in tennis and was given intensive training.

Tennis

Sjøwall went on to compete in tennis, devoting his time to the sport. He won 14 national championships in tennis between 1955 and 1966. He also made good showings in several international tournaments.

Photography

Sjowall had an apprenticeship in photography with Edvard Welinder in Stockholm

He won the Portrait of the Year award in the 1967 Photography Yearbook, as well as other national and international awards. He has completed a number of portrait assignments for the Norwegian Royal Family

In 1968 at the age of 32, Sjowall took over his father's studio. In addition to the assignments noted above, he has completed a number of photographic restorations. He speaks out on issues of quality in professional photography.
