The island is 6.58 km² in area. It is losing population, which sank from 588 in 1996 to 477 in 2006.

The four villages are all located on the west coast. From north to south, they are:

Ha'ano is the main village and district center, with a population of 135. Fakakakai is the largest village, with a population of 215.

The district of Ha'ano includes beside the namesake island also the island Mo'unga'one (1.17 km², pop. 136, 20 km to the west), and a few uninhabited islands.

Trivia
