Hamre is a village and parish in Hordaland
county, Norway. The village of Hamre is located near the extreme western point of Osterøy, across the fjord from Knarvik
.
). The spelling of the name was changed from Hammer to Hamre in 1915. On January 1, 1904 the district Åsane
was separated from Hamre to constitute a municipality of its own. The split left Hamre with a population of 2,914. On 1 July 1914 a part of Hamre with 622 inhabitants was transferred to Åsane.
On 1 January 1964 the island Flatøy
with 166 inhabitants was incorporated into Meland
municipality while the area north of Osterfjorden
with 1,240 inhabitants was incorporated into Lindås
. The rest of Hamre, with 1,166 inhabitants, was merged with parts of Bruvik
, Haus
and Hosanger to create the new municipality Osterøy
.
Findings from the Stone Age
suggest that people have been living in Hamre and the surrounding area for more than 3,500 years. Hamre Church dates from 1622. An inscription on the old main entrance states the church could be dated back to 1585. There had previously been a stave church
at this site dating from about the year 1024. The Stave church was demolished when the present church was built. The church was partially rebuilt in 1859 and restored in 1945 and 1949. There is the baptismal font made of soapstone, which is dated from around the year 1250.
