"Hear My Train A Comin'" (aka, "Getting My Heart Back Together Again") is a blues song written by Jimi Hendrix
that he recorded several times between 1967 and 1970 but was not released until after his death. The earliest recording of the song is an acoustic version of the song which appeared in 1973 on Sound Track Recordings from the Film Jimi Hendrix
which was the companion album to a documentary film. Two versions of the song dating from December 1967 also appear on the 1998 BBC Sessions. Hendrix also performed the song several times during 1969 and 1970, including at Woodstock
and at at the Fillmore East with the Band of Gypsys
. These versions, respectively, appear on Live at Woodstock
and Live at the Fillmore East. The earliest official release of the song was the version recorded at Woodstock, listed as "Get My Heart Back Together", on the Woodstock 2
concert album issued in July 1971. Four months later, a live version recorded on May 30, 1970, at the Berkeley Community Theater was included on the Hendrix's second posthumously-released album Rainbow Bridge
. The 1967 acoustic version and live Berkeley version were also included on the 1994 compilation Blues. While Hendrix probably recorded several studio versions of "Hear My Train A Comin'", no definitive studio recording exists and only two studio versions have been officially released. The first appeared on the Midnight Lightning
album from 1975 which included some bass and guitar overdubs by producer Alan Douglas
. The second is a rehearsal recording from February 1969 that was included on the The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set from 2000.
