. In 1823 he came to Michigan. He served as a justice for Wayne County before being appointed to the Michigan Territorial Supreme Court.

After his service on the court Chipman returned to private practice but again became a Wayne County judge in the 1840s. Chipman was an Episcopalian and served as a vestryman.
