"Gardy", as he is known, was selected to replace his deceased father, "Tito" Colón, when the latter died in office of a massive heart attack. At the time, the current mayor was the Staff Director of the Rules Committee of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives.
He is a graduate of Penn State University. In 1988 he married Odette Piñeiro
