John Colling was the stepson of William Colling an officer in the US Army stationed in Tianjin. William Colling married a Russian refugee who had three sons which he adopted. These sons became US citizens after registering at the local US consulate and when Japan took over in the late 30s the three came to the USA.
During the second world war John G Colling was first working as undercover agent in Burma under General Stilwell during the Japanese occupation before joining the American observation group to China later.
John Colling lived after the war at Tahoe, Ca where he a.o. wrote a book about his encounter with the MAO leadership.
