Bush gained notability in 1991, during "Operation Desert Storm," after enlisting as a Combat Medic in the United States Army Reserves, during the first U.S. war with Iraq. His enlistment upheld a Bush family tradition of military service during periods of conflict dating back to World War II. He began Basic Combat Training assigned to Company D, of the 3 Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, on Feb. 19, 1991, just four days before the U.S. ground assault began. He served with distinction as a junior enlisted soldier in the rank of Private First Class and as a Squad Leader in his platoon. After graduating Basic Combat Training, he then completed his Military Occupational Speciality qualification training as a Combat Medic at Fort Sam Huston in San Antonio, Texas.

and the nephew of U.S. President George H. W. Bush
