José Pereira

José Costa Pereira was a Portuguese goalkeeper. He is mostly remembered for being the World Cup 1966 goalkeeper in all but one games.

José Pereira, usually considered a good but a not a great goalkeeper, played for Belenenses, from 1954/55 to 1966/67. He earned 11 caps for Portugal National Team. His debut, aged 33, was in the 1–0 win over Turkey, on 19 April 1965, for the World Cup qualifying games. He was selected for the 1966 World Cup finals. Joaquim Carvalho played the first game in the World Cup finals, a 3–1 win over Hungary. José Pereira was chosen to play the other five games of the great campaign Portugal had, finishing in third place. He had many fault in the first goal that Portugal suffered in the epic semi-final lost to England by 1–2. After the World Cup finals, his last game was the 1–2 defeat to Sweden, on 13 September 1966, for the European Championship qualifiers.
