José Ramón Medina Elorga (San Francisco de Macaira, Guárico, 20 July, 1919 - Caracas
, 14 June, 2010), was a Venezuela
n lawyer, writer, poet and politician.
Studied primary education in Ocumare del Tuy
, secondary at the Colegio Federal of Maracay
and the Fermín Toro and Andrés Bello schools in Caracas. For 1948, was part of the literary group "Contrapunto". At the beginning of the 1950s, graduated as Doctor in Political and Social Sciences in the Central University of Venezuela
(UCV). Also, during this decade, was director of the Shell Magazine of Venezuela, and won the National Prize for Literature
(1961). Between 1963 until 1967, worked as secretary of the UCV.
In 1974, founded Biblioteca Ayacucho (An editorial of the Venezuelan government for the promotion of classic works of Latin America), being its director until 2001. Also, was editor of the daily El Nacional
, and director of its literary supplement: Papel Literario. During his political career, was part of Venezuela's Supreme Court, also worked as Attorney General, Comptroller General and senator for Caracas in the National Congress
.
Some of his works included: “La edad de la esperanza” (1947), “Poesía Plural” (1969), “Sobre la tierra yerma” (1971), “Ser verdadero” (1982), “Certezas y Presagios” (1984), and “50 años de literatura venezolana” (1969).
Died in Caracas of natural causes on 14 June, 2010. His son, Ramón José Medina, is part of the political opposition to president Hugo Chávez
. The library of the Comptroller General's Office, was named after him.
