At the age of 21 Faria Lima started his military career in the Brazilian Air Force

by 1958. Before, during the time he was at the Military College, he proved to be an outstanding student. During the 1930s, together with Eduardo Gomes and others, flew through the country inland, working for the Mail Air Lines. At FAB he studied to be a military pilot, watcher and aeronautical engineer, specializing in engineering at the Superior College of Aeronautics in France
. Participated in the creation of Ministério da Aeronáutica, during the time as a technical assistant for Minister Salgado Filho. He was chief of the Aeronautical Commission in USA and commander of Campo de Marte

. By the end of 1968 he joined the extinct ARENA

Faria Lima's administration was distinguished by the number of constructions, between them, most notorious are: Marginais Tietê and Pinheiros, Avenida Sumaré, Radial Leste, 23 de Maio, Rubem Berta, the beginnings of the Metro and also improvements in the health system, education, social and etc. It was during his administration that the trolley service was discontinued in São Paulo.
