between 1928 and 1930. He was the vice-presidential nominee on the ticket of Getúlio Vargas
in the 1930 presidential elections. His death was closely followed by the Brazilian Revolution of 1930
which brought Vargas to power.
The state capital, formerly Parahyba, was renamed João Pessoa
in his honour shortly after his death.
Pessoa is also commemorated in the Paraíba
state flag, which features the word Nego ("I deny"), a reference to Pessoa's 1929 refusal to support then-president Washington Luís' designated successor Júlio Prestes
in his bid for the federal presidency.
