Kamzík TV Tower
Encyclopedia
The Kamzík TV Tower is a 200 metre tall television transmission tower in the Koliba
area of Bratislava
, the capital of Slovakia
. It sits 433 m AMSL on the Kamzík hill, part of the Little Carpathians
, overlooking much of the city. The tower lies within the territory of the Bratislava Forest Park. It was constructed in 1975, replacing the old transmission tower. The tower was constructed according to the project of architects Stanislav Májek, Jakub Tomašák, Juraj Kozák, Milan Jurica and Ján Privitzer.
The tower has an observation deck and the revolving "VEŽA" restaurant at 70 m, was open to visitors. The restaurant was approximately 68 m from the base of the tower, 506 m AMSL. In conditions of good visibility, Austria
, Hungary
, the Czech Republic
, and, of course, Slovakia, are visible from the tower.
The VEŽA restaurant ceased operation in May 2010 due to a lack of customers, and all its operations including the restaurant chefs and staff have now moved to the 'West Restaurant' at the 'Best Western West Hotel' about 100m down the tower approach road. The VEŽA restaurant's website is however still active and the phone lines divert through to the Best Western Hotel. It is not clear if the VEŽA establishment will reopen under a new guise or left to be derelict.
In 2011 new restaurant called Altitude was openned with a slightly improved interior with a new Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant is divided into a observation cafe bar Brasseria and main section with rotating tables to provide 360 panoramatic view.
