. It opened in 1956 at a site on E. Central Ave (which is not the same as the present E. Central site), in east Wichita, and was operated by the Jesuits as a preparatory school
for young men. Jesuits served at the school in various capacities until the early 1990s. Alumni of the initial Chaplain Kapaun school recall that under the basketball court's "floating floor" was a rifle range, where students - under supervision - practiced marksmanship with school-supplied .22 cal rifles, and that supported a school rifle team. Particularly memorable was an incident in the late '50s where a student went forward to retrieve his target and was shot in the leg by another student who hadn't realized the range was closed. Upon returning to school after recovery, the wounded student achieved a significant degree of notoriety showing off the pencil-eraser-sized scar on his calf.
Mount Carmel Academy was established in 1887 by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) as a girl's boarding school
. In 1961, the school moved to its current site in east Wichita. The BVM sisters served the school until the early 1990s.
As of May 27, 2009 Kapaun began progress on their newest addition of a $6.5 million athletics complex and a new track. This addition will be known as the Coach Herm and Jackie Bachrodt Athletics Complex, in honor of longtime KMC Coach Herm Bachrodt and his late wife Jackie Bachrodt. The project was completed in summer 2010.
