The direct overnight train service between Kemijärvi and Helsinki was controversially withdrawn in September 2006, with VR stating that its new sleeping car
trains could not operate with the diesel locomotives needed for the non-electrified railway north of Rovaniemi. In March 2008 the overnight train to/from Helsinki was restored.
The line from Rovaniemi to Kemijärvi opened as recently as 1934. As of 2007, the future of Kemijärvi's few remaining passenger train services were in doubt, but the restoration of the sleeping car train appears to have secured the line's future.
There is also a railway beyond Kemijärvi to Salla
