Stax is a snack food made from potato
es and produced by Frito Lay. It was introduced in 2003 to act as competition for Procter & Gamble
's Pringles
. They are packaged in a plastic tube while Pringles
are stored in a cardboard tube. One must be very careful with the plastic packaging of the Stax as the rim around the top sometimes has a very sharp edge that has been known to cut the hand of many snackers. A similar product was introduced in the late 1960s under the Munchos
brand (the current incarnation of Munchos is a much different product); the primary difference being the packaging (Munchos was packaged in bags while Lay's Stax is packaged in plastic tubes).
In Brazil they are on the market under the brand name "Elma Chips Stax" since late 2006 in the flavors "Cheddar", "Sour Cream & Onion" and "Original" (Regular). Elma Chips is a Brazilian brand of Pepsico Inc, also known for "Stiksy", among others. The yellow lid is marked with "Lay's Stax". In Venezuela, they were introduced in early 2007 with the flavors "Cheddar", "Sour Cream & Onion" and "Natural Flavour". Lay's Stax are known for being very similar to Pringles.
