Liverpool finished the season as league champions for the 18th time, and looked on course for another double
, only to be knocked off course in the final stages for the third season running - this time by a dramatic 4-3 semi-final defeat against a Crystal Palace side they had beaten 9-0 in the league earlier in the season.
The autumn of 1989 saw the departure of striker John Aldridge
to Spain, having lost his place in the starting line-up to a resurgent Ian Rush, who had returned to the club a year earlier after a unhappy season in Italy.

Aldridge had remained a first-choice player in 1988-89 after Rush's return, either playing in a three-man attack alongside Rush and Beardsley or alongside Beardsley in a two-man attack in the 14 league games that Rush was unfit for, but for 1989-90 Dalglish had decided to stick with a two-man attack of Rush and Beardsley, and Aldridge knew that leaving Anfield would be his best chance of regular first team action.

Liverpool had almost consistently been England's top team for at least 15 years until now, but alarm bells were ringing all around Anfield
as their deadly north-west rivals Manchester United
had spent heavily on a host of top players as manager Alex Ferguson
looked to end Liverpool's dominance of English football. However, it was looking highly doubtful that the balance of power would take place this season, as United were in the bottom half of the table and Liverpool had now gained the lead. The immediate threat was coming from regular title contenders Arsenal and Everton, but an unexpected challenge from the likes of Chelsea and Millwall was starting to emerge and was bringing back memories of the early part of the decade where Liverpool had more than once found their title challenge under fire from unfashionable clubs including Swansea City and Watford
