. Northeast of the island lies Løgstør Bredning while Livø Broads lies west and south of the island.

Since 1977 Livø has been a protected island and can be visited by ferry every day between 1 April and 1 September. Dogs and motor vehicles are not allowed to Livø. It must be good to bring a bicycle, but there is no reason to, because you can easily walk around the island in an afternoon - it becomes a journey of approx. 10 km. When you go ashore at Livø, you meet incredible natural beauty, including at the central, shallow part of the island by Louisehøj and Louisedal where hilltop towers 43 meters above the sea. The island is a moraine pushed up by ice from Løgstør Broads in the last ice age. In the cliffs overlooking the sea at the northwestern part of the island you can study the different layers of material that is pushed against each other. Among the material found jetties and clay that gives traction in steep slopes. The eastern and southern parts of the island is flat land with a wide beach ridge that continues south and ends in the protected Livø tab. At this newer country living herds of fallow deer. There has been living wild in Livo for generations. Livø tap growing fast and is a characteristic and somewhat inaccessible retodde. The area is designated as a seal sanctuary and thrive here seals that breed in July–August. The northern part of the island is covered with forest, mainly egeblandingsskov. Northernmost found heath vegetation. Areas are divided by 1 / 3 organic farming, 1 / 3 woods and 1 / 3 heath, grasslands and salt marshes.

The island has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and over a long period after 1150 belonged to the Vitskøl Monastery. The chapel was built in the early 1700s. After 1911 took over the Keller stupid Anstalt island, then the next 50 years was used as a Prison island and populated by mentally ill and criminals, and the staff at the plant and their families. The population tended agriculture, workshops, the forest and dairy. Birgit Kirkebæk has researched and written books about the moronic terms at Livø.

Currently, the island, in agreement with the Ministry for educational and recreational purposes. Including the party has SF Socialist People's Educational yearly three-week summer camp with political, cultural and practical feature. A second annual camp is about 200 mentally mentally Activity Week in September.

. Their attempts at farming failed due to lack of proficiency, and occupation ended by police intervention.

The town today consists largely of a street with a grocery store and a tiny power station from 1950 and the town's inn / cafeteria. In Livø can also help the island's own beer, called Livøl, which can be obtained from the grocery store and inn. There are also course-school camp with 275 beds.

The island is known for the annual Livø Jazz Festival, and in addition it must Livø provide a framework for a television series about the Danish islands, where island ranger Per Gjættermann participate and talk about Livo and its natural beauty.

Every year there also a karate camp in Livø with Viborg Karate School as a host. On arriving in camp also foreigners like Swedes, Belgians, Poles and Dutchmen besides a lot of Danes.
