Morton was re-elected in 1997, 2001 and 2005. Earlier, she served on Evanston City Council as Fifth Ward alderman for nine years.

Prior to her experience in municipal government, Morton was an educator at Foster Elementary School, Nichols and Chute middle schools, and principal of Evanston's Haven Middle School.
