Manchester City F.C. Reserves and Academy
Encyclopedia
Manchester City
is represented at Reserve level by the Elite Development Squad, also referred to as just the Elite Squad, or EDS, a predominantly 'Under-21' side that replaced the previous (more senior) Reserve team in a move to focus on youth development post-academy. The club is represented at the 'Under-18' level by the Manchester City Academy team.
used to play in the Barclays Premier Reserve League North
in seasons prior to the current one. Starting with the 2011-12 season, the EDS will now compete in the NextGen Series
competition,
a Champions League format tournament only open to a select group of 'Under-19' teams located in western Europe.
The NextGen Series organisers invited the 16 teams competing in the inaugural season of this new competition based on which clubs were considered to have the best academies in Europe.
The EDS will continue to play fixtures in both the Manchester Senior Cup
and Lancashire Senior Cup
plus several other matches and tournaments such as the Central League Cup.
Manchester City have fielded a reserve team since 1892, when the reserves played in the Lancashire Combination. The reserves were champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1901-02.
The club left the Lancashire Combination in 1911 to join the Central League
upon its formation. The City reserve team then played in the Central League until 2000, winning it on three occasions in the 1977-78, 1986-87 and 1999-2000 seasons. In 2006 the club re-entered the Central League – now the Pontin's League (West) – but this time in order to provide games for the 'Under-17' age group of players.

, who has a first team squad number of 60, will wear the No. 9 shirt when he plays for the EDS as its main striker).
The MCFC first team squad numbers are normally assigned and published in late July during the close season and they remain constant for the entire duration of the upcoming season (meaning that a squad number that is assigned to a player in the close season who subsequently wears that number in a competitive match, but who later leaves the club during that same season, will NOT be assigned to another player during the remainder of that season). The first team squad numbers depicted in this article are consequently current as of 29 July 2010.
is made up of 19-22 year old players many of whom will spend all, or a large portion, of their season out on loan to other domestic and foreign professional clubs in order to increase their competitive playing experience. EDS players that become too old to be fielded as 'Under-21' status players are, in the majority of cases, either released or transferred to other clubs, or in the case of only the few most promising talents, promoted to the Manchester City first team squad. The most notable exceptions to that 'Under-21' cutoff rule are the goalkeepers who, because of their special skill set and potentially lengthier careers, might continue to play for the EDS into their mid to late twenties.
In addition to the main 19-22 year old core of youth players on the roster, the EDS also contains a select number of the best-talented 'Under-18' Academy players that regularly train and play at a level that is 1, 2 or even 3 years above their age peers. During a season these young players will play in both EDS and Academy team fixtures and accordingly they are considered to be members of both squads.
In order to avoid any confusion by listing the same names twice in this article, these dual-squad players are only listed as being a member of either one or other of the EDS and Academy team squads. The dual-squad 'Under-18' players that are listed as being members of the EDS squad are those that are officially defined as being part of that squad on the MCFC OWS, while all of the other dual-squad players are listed as being members of the Academy squad, even if they have made more appearances for the EDS team this season than some of those listed in the EDS squad. The dual-squad players on both team rosters are appropriately identified with an asterisk in each case.
Any of the EDS players might possibly be selected to be a member of the team sheet submitted for a first team fixture during the course of the season, and if they make the starting eleven, or are utilized as a substitute during the game, they will have played for the first team. Thus it is theoretically possible, although not very likely, for one of the 'Under-18' dual-squad players - such as Alex Henshall - to appear for the first team, the EDS team and the Academy team all in the same season.
Similarly, players from the MCFC first team may also be utilized in EDS matches from time to time (and like the 'Under-18' EDS players not listed in the Academy squad, they are also not listed on the EDS roster as they are already included in the more senior first team squad). First team players most likely to be so utilized by the EDS team will be those on the fringe of the first team that are not included in either of the UEFA or Premier League 25-man squads or are not seeing many first team appearances for other reasons, as well as first team players returning to full match fitness after a sustained layoff due to injury, or first team players that were expected to be out on loan for most or all of the season returning back from their loan spell early due to recall or other unforeseen situations. First team players suspended for breach of contract might also be utilized by the EDS team.

Squad numbers
The squad numbers depicted for the EDS players in this article are MCFC first team squad numbers - which means that these are the shirt numbers that the EDS players will wear if and when team-sheeted to play for the MCFC first team in either a friendly or competitive game. The MCFC official first team squad consists of about 40 players, give or take (this number varies over time and at the time of this writing the number is currently 38), which is why the EDS players' squad numbers start in the region of the high thirties. When these players represent the EDS team in NextGen Series or Manchester Senior Cup fixtures they wear shirt numbers assigned exclusively to the EDS players (e.g., the forward John GuidettiJohn Guidetti

Manchester City's Academy is responsible for youth development at the club, with the goal of developing young players for the future. The academy is one of the most revered in the country and since its new incarnation in 1998 it has produced more professional players than any other Premier League club. To date, the club has produced 15 graduates who have received full international call-ups from their various countries; 14 that have represented their respective countries at the 'Under-21' or 'Under-20' level; 35 who have progressed on to become City first team players at some point; and more than 60 that are currently playing professional league football.History
