. In 2004 he moved to Hafnarfjörður to play with FH after growing up in his hometown Ísafjörður where he played with BÍ 88 until he was 16 years old. First he enjoyed a success with the youth teams of FH, winning the cup in 2004 and also the double in 2005, which is the only group in the club who have won the double.
In 2005 he got his debut for the first team 18 years of age in the last match of the season coming on as a substitute when 20minutes were left on the game. It took him only one minute to get a penalty for his team which their top goalscorer Tryggvi Guðmundsson then smashed the ball in to the net to complete his hattrick.
In 2006-2010 seasons Matthías won with his team 5 titles in 5 years, 3 league titles and two cups. In 2007 he was voted the best young player in the league by other players. In 2009 his best season yet ended with a league title, most assists in the league and 6th goalscorer despite playing as a midfielder and also a right back some games because of injuries. In the spring 2010 he became one of the youngest captains ever in the club when he was nominated as the club captain for the season 2010 by his manager Heimir Guðjónsson. In 2010 season he was voted the best midfielder in the league by other players in a survey by the most popular football website in Iceland, www.fotbolti.net. The highlight of the season was when FH won the cup 4-0 against their rivals KR where Matthías scored first two goals from the penalty spot and then receiving the cup after the game.
