in 2004 and 2006 and 2009 Quirke has never established himself in the starting team with Kerry, and is mainly seen as a squad player filling in when other first choice players are unavailable. Quirke was widely acknowledged to be the player of the championship in Keirns O' Rahillys recent county championship run.
Like his Kerry teammate Kieran Donaghy
, Quirke is also a talented basketball
player and has won two basketball National Cups with the Abrakedabra Tralee Tigers. As in Donaghy's case, however, Quirke's basketball career has been severely curtailed by football commitments since he became a Kerry player.Micheal is a great grand nephew of the great Denis Curran who won an All Ireland medal with Kerry in 1903
