He was selected to be the International Godfather of the 2010 National Puerto Rican Parade (by its fans and committee), a major event held annually in New York City. However, because of his history of domestic violence, this sparked a major controversy with Puerto Rican community leaders. Many were calling for a boycott of the parade unless he was disinvited from the event. In an open letter to the media Rios asked for the community's support in this matter. He eventually resigned to his invitation in hopes that the event would go on peacefully how, in his words, it was originally intended to be.
