Vice-Admiral McFadden was born in Belfast
, Northern Ireland
as the youngest of four boys. He was educated at Belfast Royal Academy
before his family emigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia
when he was a teenager. McFadden attended Argyle Senior Secondary. McFadden is married to Eva McFadden (born Edmonds) from Bedford, Nova Scotia
and has two children.
In July 2011, in anticipation of his retirement from the Canadian Forces, McFadden was replaced as Chief of the Maritime Staff by Vice-Admiral Paul Maddison
who is styled as Commander Royal Canadian Navy. McFadden retired at the end of the summer after completing 37 years of military service. He was awarded the Order of Military Merit
