. Mamaloni served as prime minister from 1981 to 1984, 1989 to 1993 and 1994 to 1997, and the party was always among the largest in the Solomon Islands. The party did well in the August 1997 parliamentary elections, but Mamaloni resigned as leader and Danny Philip

 replaced him. Other parties made a coalition against it and no member of the party became prime minister. Philip did not last long as party leader.
