The race was given its present title, the Prix d'Arenberg, in 1925. This was in memory of Auguste d'Arenberg
(1837–1924), a long-serving member of the Société d'Encouragement, a former governing body of horse racing in France.
The Prix d'Arenberg was cancelled once during World War II
, in 1939. It was temporarily switched to Auteuil
in 1940, Maisons-Laffitte
in 1943 and Le Tremblay
in 1944. The Auteuil running was contested over 900 metres.
The event began its first period at Chantilly in 1975. It returned to Longchamp in 1983, and it continued there until 1993. Its current distance, 1,100 metres, was introduced in 1994. The venue was frequently changed during the next decade – there were brief spells at Maisons-Laffitte (1994, 2002–03), Chantilly (1995, 1997, 1999–2001) and Evry (1996). It was cancelled in 1998 due to budget cuts. The race moved back to Chantilly in 2004.

The event was established in 1911, and it was originally called the Prix des Coteaux. In the early part of its history it was held at Longchamp, and it was initially contested over 1,100 metres. The race was abandoned throughout World War IWorld War I
