On 28 September 1839 he married Matilda (died 1882), second daughter of Thomas Southwell, 3rd Viscount Southwell

On 12 September 1851 he resigned his seat as MP, refusing to serve under Lord John Russell, whose Ecclesiastical Titles Act was designed to prevent a restoration of a Catholic hierarchy in England.
He died in 1880 in Kingstown
