At seven years, Pérez sang in the choir and play in the Baptist church in the neighborhood, so he began studying guitar, piano and battery and, influenced by the great African-American community that is in your neighborhood, he introduced in the black music, especially R&B and gospel music

Because he wanted get an electric guitar and to join a musical band, got a job at age 12 in a company that manufactured barbed wire, because their parents did not have much money. Then he was part of several rock bands in his neighborhood until he was invited to join the group Pearly Queen (a Top 40 cover band, which was very successful in Miami in 1973), when he had 15 year. The group won a contract to play in all Big Daddy Flanigan Clubs in the U.S. and Canada-90 clubs playing five sets a night, five or six nights a week. He remained in the group for five years. In these clubs he learned to produce music. They had to play hit songs of the moment. Because he had to make arrangements for those songs, Perez decided to learn has to do musical arrangements and recordings. At twenty years after leaving the group, he produced and wrote songs for some local singers Latinos in Miami. Later, he began working as a gofer at Miami Sound Studios, in studies of Carlos Granado. In 1983, he began to tax in North Miami on 30th Street. He cleaned and slept here, because he was going through a divorce. He was determined to record their own songs and he would not give tax for the bands of his friends. One day the owner, Pablo Cano, heard a ballad he had written and he decided to do an album with Rudy. This album was what made Jose Menendez, who was then working at RCA Records, decided to hire him.
