S. M. Jaleel and Company
Encyclopedia
SM Jaleel & Company Limited, affectionately known as SMJ, is one of the oldest and largest manufacturers of non alcoholic drinks in the English speaking Caribbean. Since its inception in 1924, their wide portfolio of beverages have become household names across the Caribbean, and are now distributed to over 60 countries worldwide.
Their products span a host of carbonated soft drinks, exotic fruit juices, purified and flavored water, energy drinks, and other fruit flavored beverages. They own every stage of production and manufacture their own PET
(plastic) bottles, tetra packs (juice boxes), and the cans that their wide variety of products are packaged in. As such, the company enjoys iconic status as the Caribbean’s premier soft drink manufacturer with a reputation for quality, innovation and commercial acumen.
The company lays claim to several first time accomplishments surrounding their PET bottle technology. Their blow molding facility is the largest in the Caribbean. Twenty five years of experience in plastic blowing technology has enabled a wide array of PET bottles in different shapes and sizes for their products.
SMJ was also the first in the world, in conjunction with Reynolds Metal Company, to fill fruit juices in aluminum cans. This was done using Nitrogen technology in the 1980s, and eliminated the need for artificial preservatives in the product.
Currently, SMJ’s products are found in over half a million wholesale and retail stores, including Walmart and other renowned international retailers, and their employee base comprises over 2000 employees in five continents.
The company follows strict USDFA international industrial standards and is also a certified member of two US based quality control organizations; NSF International, and the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA).
