San José de las Matas is a municipality
(municipio
) of the Santiago province in the Dominican Republic
. Within the municipality there are three municipal district
s (distritos municipal): El Rubio, La Cuesta and Las Placetas.
As of the 2002 census the municipality had a total population of 44,475 inhabitants, 9,901 living in its urban settlements
and 34,574 in its rural
district
s (Secciones). 35,428 did live in its seat (cabecera literally head), 9,194 in the town
of San José de las Matas itself and 26,234 in its rural districts. The municipal district El Rubio had 9,047 inhabitants, 707 living in the village
