. It is a very sparsly populated and undeveloped region with its population highly concentrated along the coast, mostly at Sept-Îles (75% of the population).
It allegedly takes is name from 7 major rivers that join the Saint Lawrence
within the territory: Moisie, Sainte-Marguerite, Trinité, Pentecôte, aux Rochers, Pigou and Manitou. But neither the Trinité River nor the Pigou River reaches the Saint Lawrence within the limits of the county regional municipality, and many other rivers could be amongst those "seven rivers".
The municipality has a land area of 30469.17 square kilometres (11,764.2 sq mi) and a 2006 census
population of 34,713 inhabitants, the vast majority (73.5%) in the city of Sept-Îles
