Establishment
This is an unusual park-cum-botanical garden was developed around the natural contours of the land more than a hundred years ago and this is developed by Mr. J.D. Sims and Major Murray in the year of 1874. Naturally occurring trees, shrubs and creepers, are in the park as are many unusual species of plants that have been brought in from a variety of places around the world. The main event in this park is an annual fruit show and vegetable show held in May.Collections and beauty

Features
The Nilgiris has a unique tropical mountain climate, so the garden has the ideal climatic conditions for growing flowers and trees. Temperature variation is less and the rainfall distribution is uniform in the locale, which results in a long flowering season. The garden is visited by thousands of tourists through out the year and even in winter. The natural shola with winding footpaths all over the higher slopes of the park is the most distinctive and picturesque are the main feature of this park. At the head of the gardens the well kept lawns, the artistically laid out ornamental beds, looking beautiful and lacking no wealth of the flowering plants or shrub in great variety and colour are great feasts to the eyes.Fruit Show
The Fruit Show is the major cultural events of the region attracting thousands of tourists and local people. The Fruit Show is held in the last week of May and is celebrated for two days. Till the year 1979, it was organized by Nilgiris Agri-Horticultural Society. More than 50 varieties of fruits grown in the region are displayed in the fruit show in Sim's Park, Coonoor. The main objective of Fruit Show is to create awareness among the fruit growers and various farming societies to engage in the cultivation of fruit. During the Fruit Show, Fruit Garden Competitions are held where more than 20 gardens of the Nilgiri district participates. The best fruit garden and the best exhibits of fruits and vegetables are awarded. Some of the major fruits of the region such as apples, Pears, peaches, plums, apricots, persimmons,lemons, pomegranates etc. can be seen and tasted in the fruit show. The Department of Horticulture at Coonoor sells and displays fruit products like Marmalade, Jam, Jelly, Squashes, Pickles at the festival that are produced here. At the fruit show they even demonstrate the various techniques of production to the interested entrepreneurs.See also
