Parish history

The parish was established in 1852 by the Rev. John Lewis, an ex-Redeptionist, who arrived in Staten Island that year. Mass was first celebrated in a private house before private land was donated and after a few years a church and rectory were built.

St. Mary's Parish School

The parochial school was established by the founding pastor, the Rev. Lewis, which in 1914 was conducted by 5 Sisters of Charity of Mount St. Vincent-on-the-Hudson (who also conduct an academy) and 3 lay teachers. The school had, in 1914, 182 boys and 188 girls. The school was among 27 closed by Archbishop Dolan in the Archdiocese of New York on 11th of January 2011.
