. Opened in 1961 by the Bishop of Kuala Lumpur, Dominic Vendargon, it was only the second Catholic parish to open in Petalin Jaya, after the Church of the Assumption. St. Francis Xavier's is unique in that is in run wholly by Jesuits, the only such parish in Malaysia. The main Jesuit residence in Kuala Lumpur, Xavier Hall, is located on church grounds.

A hostel for Catholic students attending the nearby Universiti Malaya is also situated in the church compound. Adjoined to the church is the Catholic High School, a Chinese-medium school opened by missionaries but now no longer attached to the church.

As of 2011 the parish pastor at St. Francis Xavier is Fr. Simon Yong.
