History

St. Joseph Parish was founded in 1792 and the present church building was begun in 1853. The church became a cathedral after Blessed John XXIII established the Diocese of Baton Rouge on July 20, 1961. The church underwent a renovation in 1967 and was consecrated as a cathedral in 1970.
