It is the Italian version of the St. Leger Stakes

, and it used to be contested over 2,900 metres. For a period it was classed at Group 3 level, and it used to take place in July. The race was opened to horses aged four or older in 1994, and at the same time it was rescheduled for the autumn.
The 2008 running was cancelled because of a strike in the Italian horse racing industry.
