SMCPS operates 17 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 3 high schools, and Alternative Learning Center, and a Vocational Training Center, serving students in Grades Pre-K through 12th grade. The school system is overseen by the Maryland State Department of Education.
The current Superintendent of Schools is Dr. Michael Martirano, who assumed duties on July 1, 2005, succeeding the previous Superintendent, Dr. Patricia Richardson, who stepped down in December 2004, to assume teaching duties at the University of Maryland, College Park
