History

In 1887 St. Aloysius College enrolled its first students, in a terrace house opposite the Royal Children's Hospital in Flemington Road. In 1890 the Sisters of Mercy, who still own and administer the College, moved to the present site where the College has continued to grow.

In establishing the College the Sisters of Mercy were inspired by their foundress, Catherine McAuley, to be living witnesses of God's mercy and to empower young women through Catholic education. In a society dominated by a male culture, the students were inspired to be people of faith, courage, trust and daring, to take responsibility for their lives and to strive to live the Gospel with justice and compassion.

In those early years, the College was known as St. Joseph's Convent of Our Lady of Mercy but by 1903 it was known as St. Aloysius High School. Sr. Gonzaga who was Principal from 1920–to 1924 had a major influence on the growth and direction of the College. She changed the name to St. Aloysius College and adopted the motto ‘'Ad Altiora Natus', which means ‘'Born for Higher Things'. Today, ‘'Ad Altiora’' is the College motto which we translate as “'Strive for Higher Things'.

While many physical changes have occurred since its beginning, the essential core values of St.Aloysius College have remained the same. These values are a spirit of generosity and enthusiasm, a strong sense of friendship amongst students and between staff and students, a feeling of energy and purpose about improving one's opportunities in life through education, a practical understanding of the vision of Mercy, and a desire to achieve all that is possible.
