St Michael's was appointed a "Specialist Science School" in early 2004, Since then, the school has become part of the following:

House Block System

The school has five house blocks, each named after five English Cardinals

; Hinsley House is assigned to the Year 7 student body, Vaughan House belongs to the Year 8 pupils, Griffin to Year 9, Heenan to Year 10, and Wiseman to the Year 11 students.

Each house block is used for eating dinner/lunch, for students to go at break times and also used as classrooms for teacher without a classroom of their own, they also serve as the location of year group assemblies and similar gatherings. They also include the office of each Head of Year, a member of staff who has pastoral responsibility for the year group.

Currently those staff are as follows:
Head of Year 7 - Mr A Burgess,
Head of Year 8 - Mr Scott, Mrs A Armstrong,
Head of Year 9 - Mrs A Armstrong,
Head of Year 10 - Mr Thompson
Head of Year 11 - Miss C McCarthy,

Faith Background

The School has a strong faith based ethos and has a full-time lay chaplain, who has responsibility for all kinds of activities ranging from the planning of Mass, liturgies, assemblies and retreats, to charity meetings and events.

Currently the schools lay chaplain is Mrs L. Holland
