Störmer (crater)
Encyclopedia
Störmer is a lunar
impact crater
that is located on the far side of the Moon
from the Earth
, named after Carl Størmer
, a Norwegian mathematician and aurora
researcher. It lies in the northern part of the lunar surface, to the southeast of the crater Olivier
and to the north of van Rhijn
.
This is a relatively young formation with features that have not received a significant amount of wear or erosion from subsequent impacts. The edge of the rim is sharply defined, and the inner wall is terraced along the northwestern side. The interior floor is relatively level, with a double-peak formation at the mid-point.
Störmer P, a satellite crater, is attached to the exterior of the rim of Störmer along the southwest side.
Moon
The Moon is Earth's only known natural satellite,There are a number of near-Earth asteroids including 3753 Cruithne that are co-orbital with Earth: their orbits bring them close to Earth for periods of time but then alter in the long term . These are quasi-satellites and not true moons. For more...

Impact crater
In the broadest sense, the term impact crater can be applied to any depression, natural or manmade, resulting from the high velocity impact of a projectile with a larger body...

Olivier is an old, eroded crater that is located in the northern hemisphere on the far side of the Moon. It lies in a region of dense cratering on all sides. To the east-southeast is a younger but comparably sized crater named Störmer...

Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Störmer.Störmer | Latitude | Longitude | Diameter |
