History
The city was founded in 1769 and became a municipality in 1773. It became a city in 1875. The city became a touristic area by the municipality (State Law # 11,197 of July 5, 2002).On January 1, 2010, the Paraitinga river (Rio Paraitinga) flooded much of the lower elevation areas of the town. Numerous historical buildings were destroyed with many more damaged and which may be unsalvageable. The church in the central square collapsed during the flood. It had been built in the early nineteenth century and served as the symbol of São Luíz do Paraitinga.
