in Sotavento in southcentral Cape Verde
. The municipal population is around 16,104, the area is 91 km² and the density is about 176/km². São Miguel is located about 60 km NNW of Cape Verde's capital Praia

and N of Assomada
and Picos.
São Miguel is linked with a highway linking Tarrafal and Praia and a mountain road to the Tarrafal–Assomada Route which also links to Assomada and Picos. Farmlands are situated within the coastline and valley areas, the mountains cover the rest of the municipality especially the Serra da Malagueta
in the west. Grasslands and bushes covers the rest of the area with a couple of forests.
