During climbing, the No. 2 engine suffered an uncommanded reverse thrust deployment. The aircraft yawed to the right, striking a building and crashing in a populated area, killing all 96 people aboard as well as 3 on the ground.

The aircraft, PT-MRK, wore a TAM Transportes Aéreos Regionais special promotion livery - "Number 1" at that time instead of the standard TAM livery.
