Plot introduction

The young orphan Peter Augustus Duchene has many questions, but there is one he wishes most answered: "Is his sister still alive? And if so, how can he find her?" The answer he finds from the fortuneteller in the market square of the city of Baltese is one he has to learn to believe. "An elephant! An elephant will lead him there!"

Characters

  • Peter is a boy who lost his mother and father. He is taken care of by his guardian, Vilna Lutz. Vilna Lutz is a former soldier who was marching with Peter's father when he died. Vilna is training Peter to be a soldier

Themes

A recurring theme in the book is that "the truth is always changing," a line repeatedly heard from the fortuneteller and other characters in the book.

Adaptation
